CAUSES OF INFERTILITY
Obstructive Azoospermia
Obstructive azoospermia occurs when sperm is being produced in the testes but cannot be found in the semen because of a blockage in the male reproductive tract. The good news is that in most cases of obstructive azoospermia, sperm can be recovered through microsurgery and used in an IVF-ICSI treatment.
What causes obstructive azoospermia?
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Scar tissue
- Congenital conditions (e.g. retrograde ejaculation)
- Genetics (e.g. cystic fibrosis)
- Hernia surgery
- Vasectomy
How can IVF Michigan Fertility Center help me if I have obstructive azoospermia?
When the cause of male infertility is obstructive azoospermia, the simplest procedure is TESA followed by IVF-ICSI treatment. In these cases, sperm is likely to be recovered. Depending on the cause of the obstruction, there may be permanent treatments available to you.
