Obstructive Azoospermia

Obstructive azoospermia occurs when sperm is being produced in the testes but cannot be found in the semen because of a blockage in the male reproductive tract. The good news is that in most cases of obstructive azoospermia, sperm can be recovered through microsurgery and used in an IVF-ICSI treatment.

What causes obstructive azoospermia?

• Sexually transmitted diseases
• Scar tissue
• Congenital conditions (e.g. retrograde ejaculation)
• Genetics (e.g. cystic fibrosis)
• Hernia surgery
