Oligospermia (Low sperm count)

Oligospermia refers to when the semen has low concentration of sperm. Oftentimes, semen with decreased sperm concentration may also show significant abnormalities in sperm morphology and motility. With over 60 years of collective experience and locations in Bloomfield Hills, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Saginaw and Toledo, OH, the physicians of IVF Michigan Fertility Center are available to help couples throughout the Midwest and abroad.

What causes Oligospermia?

  • Poor hormonal support
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Infection
  • Natural aging
  • Poor general health
  • Steriods
  • Testicular factors, such as Varicocele
  • Immunology problems (one's own body attacks the sperm)

Other obstacles with the semen could include:

  • Asthenospermia: The sperm has very low motility and thus is very low quality
  • Teratospermia: Abnormal morphology
